Big Sister

“April!” Donatello ran to the Lair’s guest, arms flailing wildly. “It’s so great that you paid a visit! Come with me, come, come,” he tugged at her hand. “I totally have to show you something! It’s radical!”
“Um, excuse me guys,” April said, letting Donatello pull her to his room. “This overly excited gentleman can’t wait. Say hi to master Splinter from me!”
Donatello closed the door after them, his nerves calming enough to stop jabbering.
“What’s this new thing?” April took the opportunity to speak. “You haven’t finally completed those robotic hummingbirds that fly around and drink sweet juices, have you?”
Donatello looked at her, puzzled. “Why do you ask? Was there an assignment I forgot?”
April suppressed the need to facepalm. “No. What do you want to show me?”
“Oh!” Donatello clapped his hands.
Five minutes later, April gently pointed out a mistake.
“…Oh.” Donatello fell silent, his eyes darting around the paper. “Damn,” he whispered, peeking into the stack that followed.
“How long did it take to finish this?” April asked quietly.
“A few weeks,” Donatello murmured. His concentration didn’t waver. “But if it’s just a numeric, we can go through the calculations and with a few more helpful comments we should be able to make them right.”
April imagined how long correcting a few weeks’ work would take, and put a hand on Donatello’s shoulder.
“Donnie,” she sighed. “I’m sorry but I haven’t come to brainstorm with you. As much as I love it, I want to get some sleep tonight.”
Donatello hung his head, looking positively dejected.
“But you can come with me now,” April suggested, trying to cheer him up. “I came to talk to Splinter a bit, so you could join the conversation…”
“Nah,” Donatello waved his hand, “I can’t take my mind off this right now. Go talk to sensei, I’ll just… try and see where that mistake leads.”
April squeezed his shoulder and noticed that he was leaning into the touch. She quickly let go and went to the door but Donatello spoke up, visibly tearing himself away from the problem.
“April I… I’m sorry if I’m trying to monopolise your time. I understand that you want to do other things here than brainstorm with me but…” he rubbed his brows, “you’re the only person I know I can really talk to. No one else here can understand all I’m saying and I love talking to you so much that I get too excited over it. As you’ve just seen,” he added with a frown.
“That’s nothing to be ashamed for,” April said lightly. “You just want a mind that can reflect yours. That’s why I started working with Stockman; before I found out he was an arrogant idiot who wanted only toad-eaters around to boast how marvellous he was.”
“I hope I’m not like that,” Donatello said alert.
“No,” April smiled reassuringly. “You want to connect, don’t you? Baxter only wanted to show off. Maybe meeting someone online would do the trick for you. ‘Cause I’ve been thinking…” She leaned against the wall, crossing her hands. “It’s possible that you’re becoming a little… hung up on me.”
Donatello’s mouth opened a bit and his eyes widened as he took in the message. “I… I’ve been like that?”
“Well, from what I’ve heard, you’ve never been easily excitable before we met,” April shrugged, measuring her words against his expression. “I’ve been wondering if this joy of talking to someone who understands is growing into something more.”
Donatello blinked. “You think I might have a crush on you.”
April nodded, watching him carefully. “Do you?”
“I don’t know,” Donatello said. Cheeks colouring very lightly, he asked: “Sh-should I?”
April gulped, taken aback by that question. “No,” she said, “I- I mean it’s alright if you do but I don’t think I’d return it. I’m fine with being a big sister to you all.” She chuckled, rubbing her palm across her face. “I really didn’t expect that kind of question.”
Donatello smiled sheepishly. “I’m fine with that as well. I just like spending time with you.”
April passed over the romantic sound of that and said: “Now that that’s settled, why don’t you come with me and have some fun with Splinter and the guys? I bet your mind’s off your work now.”
“Yeah,” Donatello grinned. “I do need a break.” He stretched and got up. “Let’s go.”
