Silent steps
Silent steps carried along a futuristic hallway.
Oh for shell’s sake, in 2105 Leo could hear that someone was trying to sneak past him just as well as in 2005. Wearing his favourite nightgown – shadow –, he slipped out of his bedroom to trail the misfortunate skulk. When Leo was on the job, no one prowled around the house at night. Especially not his evil clone Pedonardo.
Following the blue mutant on instinct more than anything, Leo wondered why his family had allowed taking Pedonardo in. Raphael had been against it all along, but everyone else had sided with Leo. It was curious because what Raph blamed, Leo could foresee – that they would be betrayed by him sooner or later. Probably sooner, since Pedonardo was heading to the security shutdown centre right now. (Why the heck did the building even have such a place?) Whatever the chance of turning him to the good side, the security compromise was too much of a risk. So why had Leo deliberately set him free to roam the house?
Because he wanted to know more about his evil side. He needed to understand its motivations better before he took the first step with his little brother. Leo was praised for his responsibility, so here he was being responsible by… letting his evil clone shut down the security system. Yeah.
Leo almost staggered when he realised there was a flaw to the plan. Pedonardo wasn’t following the route.
“Is he lost?” Leo whispered in wonder. “No… he seems quite determined about where he’s… oh.”
As Pedonardo disappeared in Mikey’s room, Leo’s temper flared. “No, he didn’t,” he tried to calm himself with denial. “Maybe he’s just kissing him goodnight…” But Mikey was awake, he realised. All his brothers had been warned that the clone would make his move tonight, so they were alert. Plus… not even Leo would stop at kissing goodnight.
“Alright,” he leaned on the wall. “Plan. I’ll just go inside, rip Pedonardo off of Mikey and throw him out the window… n-no, out in the hallway. Yes,” he nodded affirmatively. “That’s what I’ll do.” He shook his head trying to dispel little visions of what Pedonardo could be doing to Mikey already. “I’m coming Mikey,” he whispered and made a dramatic entrance.
Leo’s evil clone was kneeling on one knee, offering flowers to Mikey. Leo had to blink twice to be sure he wasn’t seeing things.
“I’m sure this is a dream,” he stated then.
Pedonardo growled and lunged at him. Leo’s reflexes worked, sidestepping and drawing katanas, but his mind was still clouded. What… the shell happened? I was sure Pedonardo would be molesting Mikey. Why did it look like he was taking him on a nice date?
A double-bladed knife flew by his face and Mikey cried out, jumping into the battle as well. Leo pushed his confusion away, concentrating on the skirmish at hand.
“Mikey, call Donatello,” he gave out commands. “Tell him to get the force field generator from Pedo- the… guy’s bed. And tell him and Raph to get here at once!”
Mikey nodded and fell back, reaching for his shellcell. Pedonardo grunted angrily and kicked Leo in the chest, sending him flying across the whole room. “Leo!” Mikey yelped, but the clone was already out the door and rushing to the security shutdown centre.
Leo got up with effort, wheezing harshly. Mikey examined his face quickly.
“Are you okay?”
Leo nodded. “I’m sorry I didn’t get here fast enough…”
“Fast enough? Whatcha talking about?” Mikey asked puzzled. “He was just gonna tell me he’d miss me when he was with his brothers again…”
Leonardo’s breath hitched and for a moment he wondered.
Just which one of them was the evil clone?
